Shawn Hatosy’s fan-favorite character Dr. Jack Abbot has finally shown up in The Pitt season 2, and his appearance was anything but ordinary. As Robby and his imminent replacement, Baran Al-Hashimi (Sepideh Moafi), prepared to handle the new patient, Jack Abbot waltzed into the ER wearing full tactical gear, revealing he works as a medic for the Pittsburgh SWAT Team in his free time.

After Robby successfully treats Abbot’s coworker, Al-Hashimi discusses her own experience working in high-stakes environments. Later, when Samira Mohan (Supriya Ganesh) probes him about his work with SWAT, Abbot flippantly explains that he took up a “hobby” per his therapist’s suggestion. While his second job brought him in, however, a new crisis entirely will likely keep Abbot at PTMC.

Unlike season 1’s frantic mass shooting at PittFest, the central conflict of The Pitt season 2 has slowly trickled in. At first, a neighboring hospital suddenly shuts down, causing overwhelming reroutes to PTMC. Yet, as of episode 7, The Pitt season 2’s Code Black has spiraled into a large-scale cyberattack.

To preemptively avoid being hacked, The Pitt will be forced to abandon their life-saving technology— including all computers, digital charts, and the ever-important board that tracks patients in need. Just before the credits rolled, Abbot remarked that the return to analog will be “fun,” indicating he’s here to stay for The Pitt season 2’s most chaotic stretch yet.

Abbot’s Character Continues To Be One Of The Most Intriguing

Jack’s SWAT escapades bringing him in just in time for the action is a natural progression of his character. In The Pitt season 1, Abbot came in early after hearing about the mass casualty event on a police scanner. As such, his extra work with SWAT isn’t necessarily surprising. In fact, it continues The Pitt’s most interesting character trend.

Since the start, Abbot and Robby have been two sides of the same coin, with their trauma manifesting in similar ways, most notably their rooftop moments of reflection. Just as Robby is throwing caution to the wind by driving a motorcycle without a helmet, Abbot’s adrenaline junkie side has no qualms about adding more stress and danger to his workload.

Abbot oscillating between emergency room attending and SWAT medic is far from a healthy work-life balance, but it’s a brilliant narrative strategy that brings a widely-loved character into the fold for The Pitt season 2’s true emergency.
