A look back: Eastview Mall’s history
Ground was broken for Eastview Mall in 1969 – the same year as the first moon landing and Woodstock. The mall opened in 1971, making it the same age as Walt Disney World in Orlando. Original anchor stores included Sears and Sibley’s, while early specialty retailers featured:
- Airport, a women’s clothing store known for squishy rubber floor tiles and flashing lights
- Foxmoor Casuals and Ormond, both juniors’ fashion shops
- The Shed House, a jeans store with the tagline “Everybody’s puttin’ us on”
- Bakers and Altier’s for footwear
- Bathtique, a boutique for bath and home goods
- Fanny Farmer Candies, famous for its French mint chocolate bars
- Hickory Farms, known for generous free samples
Dining nostalgia: From steaks to seafood
Past restaurant favorites included:
- Steak Stockade, a rustic steakhouse where customers could toss peanut shells on the floor
- Tale O’ the Whale, featuring a giant whale suspended from the ceiling
Eastview today
Following a $64 million expansion in the mid-1990s and a $25 million wing addition in 2003, Eastview transformed into a premier retail destination. Today, Eastview Mall is home to over 150 tenants, with anchor stores:
- Von Maur
- Macy’s
- JCPenney
- Dick’s House of Sport
- It’s the only local mall to feature luxury and specialty retailers like:
- Anthropologie
- Brooks Brothers
- L’Occitane
- Pottery Barn
- Williams Sonoma
It’s also home to the Rochester area’s only Apple Store.
